Data Sciences Summer Institute

The 2010 Data Sciences Summer Institute (DSSI) is a 6-week long program in Data Science areas. This summer program consists of an intensive class in the mathematical foundations of Data Sciences, tutorials on advanced Data Science topics and collaborative research projects.

The DSSI weaves together mathematical foundations, applications, and research via four coordinated activities:

• Core Course: An intensive course in the mathematical foundations of Data Science
• Advanced Tutorials on active research areas in Data Sciences given by leading researchers
• Expert Speaker Series: Represented are corporate, academic, and industrial researchers from around the country
• Research Project: A significant group research project relating to any one of the bodies of knowledge covered in the summer institute

When:
May 24-July 2, 2010

Where:
It is held on the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) campus. A limited number of housing accommodations have been reserved for those who need it. These accommodations include both Room and Board.

Who can Apply:
  • College Junior or Senior Computer Science students (majors or minors) and beginning Graduate students.
  • Students should show strong academic performance and must have sufficient mathematical and programming experience.
  • Applicants must currently be living in the United States as citizens, residents or Visa holders.

Research Areas:
Our program research interests fall into the following broad technical fields of Data Science:
  • Databases and Information Integration
  • Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing, and Information Extraction
  • Computer Vision
  • Information Retrieval and Web Information Access
  • Knowledge Discovery in Social & Information Networks

Program Specifics:
• Core Course: The mathematical foundations course schedule is approximately three hours a day, 4 days a week for 4 weeks for a total of forty-five instructional hours.
• Advanced Tutorials: Each tutorial is a half day, 4 days a week for 4 weeks, involving 12 hours of instruction from world-class leaders in their fields. Students are expected to enroll in three of the four tutorials.
• Expert speakers: Speakers will come from industry, academia, and national labs with presentations once or twice a week. Students will also have a chance to meet individually or in groups with the visitors.
• Research Project: Students will choose one research project to work on from a list of provided topics. Student groups will be working closely with professors and teaching assistants to determine the direction of the research and explore in depth the research topic. This will also involve developing a software system solution to the problem.  The final day of the DSSI culminates in Student Research Project presentations.

Applications for the 2010 Data Sciences Summer Institute are now being accepted. Please provide all information requested in the application, including a Personal Statement, Resume, Transcripts, and contact information for one Letter of Recommendation from a faculty member. If necessary, you may return to the application form multiple times to complete it. For full consideration apply by March 31, 2010.

About DSSI:
The Annual Data Sciences Summer Institute (DSSI) is a 6-week long study in Data Science areas. Our educational initiatives have been developed to encourage computer science students, particularly from minority serving institutions and EPSCoR states with small research programs, to pursue graduate studies at stronger institutions where they can make a bigger impact on the field, and to expose them to national lab professionals.

DSSI Mission:
The mission of the Data Sciences Summer Institute (DSSI) is to develop diverse human resources to enhance the scientific research, education, and government workforce in Data Science disciplines. This program is funded by the Department of Homeland Security’s Center of Excellence—Command, Control, and Interoperability Center for Advanced Data Analysis (CCICADA) at the UIUC’s Multimodal Information Access & Synthesis (MIAS) Center.

Purpose:
The purpose of the Institute is three-fold: 
• It provides specific and substantive training for the next generation of experts in the field.
• It serves as a tool for recruiting an experienced group of undergraduates into graduate study in one of the broad fields of information science.
• It is an intellectual community center, where participants at all levels of expertise come together in an enriched environment of collaboration and discovery.
